Reiki FAQ

 Universal life force energy

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

How does it help?

It’s a simple method of light touch that is based on the Asian concept of ki or life energy. A session feels like a glowing radiance that flows through and around you. The experience is very soothing and results in the client entering a wonderful state of relaxation in which one’s worries and cares seem to melt away.

How is a treatment given?

Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually laying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places her/his hands on or near the clients body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.

What does a Reiki session feel like?

Many people report the practitioners hands feeling very hot or very cold as they move around the body. Some may experience tingling sensations. Others have felt more physical releases such as pops, gurgles, burps, laughter, crying, hiccups and even falling asleep. Everyone is different and it will vary what each person experiences with their healing for their highest good.

What should I wear?

Something comfortable that you can easily move in as if your going to bed. Nothing constricting and tight. Sweatpants, yoga pants, sweatshirts, or pjs are a popular choice. Clients usually become cold when the energy starts flowing so layers are helpful. I do provide blankets as well to help with the chill. Whatever is most comfortable for you and that you can easily relax in will be what you want to wear.

What will my first session be like?

When you arrive you will either have some intake forms already made out for me that you can find under the "forms" tab or arrive 10 min early to fill them out when you get here. You can print them out to bring with or email them filled out back to me if you decide to do it ahead of time. After intake it will be a brief conversation about what you are looking to accomplish such as relaxation, illness, pains, etc. I will give a quick rundown on what is going to happen if its your first time. Then the session will start by you either laying on the massage table full clothed or sitting in a chair. Then I will move around the table/chair lightly touching or hovering and holding where I am guided to. When the session is over we will talk about what you experienced and any impressions I may have received during treatment as well.
